Autocar sources have revealed that we may be seeing a new luxury coupe-cabriolet version of the Lexus LS executive saloon in the next five years. In the sources’ words, the new model will be a “car that most captures the essence of what Lexus is all about: performance, luxury and the environment, more so than any Lexus model to date”.
Dubbed the LC600h, the new model has been planned as a successor to the discontinued SC, and will be based on the platform presently being developed for the next-gen LS due for a 2014 launch. It will come loaded with a V8 gasoline engine and a hybrid transmission, with two electric motors and an epicyclic gearbox. The combined power output has been estimated at more than 500 hp with a 0-100 km/h acceleration taking a little shy of 5 seconds.

There has been some subtle design changes done on the new 2011 Lexus IS, like the inclusion of a new headlamp cluster. These new headlamps incorporate LED daytime running lights. It's the car that makes you scratch your head: the 2010 Lexus GS 450h.

The reason it comes across as confusing is because this rear-wheel-drive sedan is one of the most fun Lexus cars to drive. It's all sport on the highway.

The pickup is phenomenal. It boasts nearly 300 horsepower from its 3.5-liter V-6 and on the open road, it's library quiet. The steering is crisp. While heavy, the body remains stiff through turns and its adaptive variable suspension holds the car nicely to the road.

Oh, and, it's a hybrid.

But this is a hybrid for enthusiasts, one that uses electricity for power and not just efficiency. What other mainstream hybrid goes 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds?

Of course, boosting a V-6 to provide V-8 type power is nothing new (the GS 450h has a combined 340 horsepower). It's the wave of the future as carmakers around the world look to provide power and fuel economy. Already, other carmakers are talking about four-cylinder turbos replacing V-6 engines and others have said three-cylinder engines could replace fours.
Amazing highway ride

The GS 450h shies toward the power side, which takes away from the efficiency, enabling 22 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Great mileage numbers for a V-8, so-so for a six-cylinder engine.

And while this hybrid can drive on electric motors only, it rarely does. Instead, the electric motors seem to act as a boost for the car, pushing it quickly forward and inspiring the driver to push the accelerator a little harder.

Toyota recalls 3,800 Lexus cars for steering fix

Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it is recalling about 3,800 Lexus LS sedans in the U.S. to fix a problem with the vehicle's steering system following a similar recall in Japan.

The company said the recall affects some 2009 and 2010 LS 460 and LS 600h sedans. The recall is designed to fix a problem in which the steering wheel becomes off-center after a specific driving maneuver. The problem should not occur during normal driving, the company said.

Toyota earlier Friday recalled 4,500 of the same models in Japan to address the steering issue. The recall affects roughly 2,750 vehicles elsewhere around the world.

The automaker has been working to react faster to problems after coming under government scrutiny and being slapped with a record $16.4 million U.S. fine for its slow response to its accelerator pedal recalls. It is also facing hundreds of state and federal lawsuits. Those recalls affected more than 8 million vehicles worldwide.

On Thursday, lawmakers in the U.S House of Representatives accused Toyota of failing to keep its promise to get to the bottom of what caused unintended acceleration in some of its vehicles. Jim Lentz, Toyota's top U.S. sales executive, told lawmakers that the company has no evidence that electronics are to blame for the sudden acceleration reports.

Toyota's safety concerns have triggered to the first major review of U.S. auto safety laws in Congress since the large tire recalls by Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. in 2000.

On models affected by its latest recall, Toyota said the steering wheel can briefly become out of alignment with the car's wheels when the steering wheel is turned to the extreme right or left and then re-centered. Toyota will remedy the problem by replacing the computer processor in the vehicle's variable gear ratio steering system, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said.

Ouch. This one is going to hurt: Toyota will recall its Lexus LS flagship, the super-premium car that is the only in its lineup to list for more than $100,000, over steering problems on Friday, the company just said.

Normally, the embarrassment might be considered just another recall. But atop all the other recalls that Toyota has had this year, including another congressional hearing tomorrow and a mood of general discouragement, this one could be painful.

In the U.S., it's only 3,800 cars. Worldwide, it's 11,500. Small numbers, but this is the ultimate Lexus, the one car that Toyota tries to make perfect. Toyota has tried its best to insulate its Lexus line from the raft of recalls involving its Toyotas:

The incident that sparked the nightmare, the crash near San Diego last year that killed a California Highway Patrolman and his family, was in a Lexus ES. Well, it seems like the U.S. market agrees with us. While Lexus had expected to sell 20,000 or more HS models a year--down from projections of 30,000 before the recession--Ward's Auto now reports that the total may be considerably lower than that.

Demand in Japan has been high for the car, so high in fact that early reports suggested U.S. supplies of the car might be affected. But Ward's projects U.S. sales of less than 14,000 units.

Part of the problem may be that upper-end models of the 2010 Toyota Prius not only offer a higher level of luxury equipment than on any previous Prius, but also get considerably higher gas mileage: 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway versus 35 mpg city, 34 mpg highway for the HS.

The situation could change if fuel prices rise again, but so far this spring, increases have been moderate.

the HS 250h is something of a misfit. The four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine naturally doesn't have the refinement of the V6s and V8s that power the other Lexus hybrids (RX 450h, GS 450h and LS 600hL). It's suitably inconspicuous at cruising speeds, but it gets raucous when acceleration is called for. There's also some whine from the electric motor under deceleration. More vexing is the wind, road and tire noise at highway speeds -- each is not overly obtrusive, but, cumulatively, it's enough to intrude on the quietude that's expected. The ride, for the most part, is firm not harsh, although sharper tarmac imperfections will make their presence known. The electric power steering has a slightly numb feel to it, but the sedan turns where and when it's supposed to and body roll is minimal.

Moving inside, the HS's interior is more upscale than luxurious. The car has a starting price of $39,900; the topline Ultra Premium edition (there's also Premium and Premium Sport) adds another $8,850 to the sticker, all of it in content. That includes heated and ventilated leather seats, voice-activated navigation system with integrated backup camera, outstanding 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, auto-levelling LED headlamps, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, power rear sunshade and auto-dimming side-view mirrors.

The front seats are almost bisected by the protruding centre stack, which contains the audio and climate controls as well as flip-up nav screen and "Remote Touch" joystick controller. While it's all busy and off-putting at first, the various control functions are within easy reach. The joystick and its computer mouselike interface work well, keeping the eyes at windshield level. However, programming the radio presets are overly complicated, requiring more steps than should be necessary.

One cool feature is the fact that 30% of the combined interior and trunk are covered in "Ecological Plastic," a bioplastic material that uses plant sources as raw material and is used for parts of the upholstery as well as a number of injection-moulded, foam and board components throughout the car, including trunk compartment trim, cowl side trim, door scuff plates, seat cushions and the package tray.

Consumer Reports magazine is lifting a “Don’t Buy” warning for a Lexus sport utility vehicle that failed an emergency handling test.

The magazine said on Friday that the 2010 Lexus GX 460 luxury S.U.V. passed its test after a dealership updated the software that runs the vehicle’s electronic stability control system.

The Toyota Motor Corporation recalled about 10,000 of the S.U.V.’s in the United States in April after the magazine told readers not to buy them. The automaker also stopped selling them.

Mark Templin, the Lexus group vice president and general manager, said in a statement that the automaker was pleased that the magazine had lifted the designation. He said about 75 percent of GX 460 vehicles had received the software update.

Last week, Toyota had promptly halted sales of the GX 460 after Consumer Reports noted an unexpected handling behavior, and possibly a malfunction of the electronic stability control system.

The test behavior, in which the stability system allowed the back of the vehicle to slide out sideways when the driver lifted abruptly off the accelerator while going tightly around a corner (lift-off oversteer), could potentially result in a higher chance of rollover if the vehicle were tripped by a curb, dropoff, or change in surface.

Consumer Reports subsequently gave the 2010 Lexus GX 460 a rare "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" designation.

Toyota later confirmed that its own engineers had duplicated the behavior

Curiously, there's more to the story. Now Toyota Motor Corporation has also released a confession of sorts, explaining that several different conditions contributed to the issue:

- In the GX 460 and Land Cruiser Prado, heavy components, such as the fuel tank, are located on the left side, and in left-hand drive versions, the left side is made even heavier because of the presence of the driver.
- For vehicles with certain tires (on 18-inch wheels) and equipped with the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS*) and VSC, the activation of the VSC may not be sufficient in certain circumstances due to the setting of the VSC program.

The IS 250C, from certain angles, is no exception. To provide ample space to stow the roof and still leave a little carry-on luggage room, the entire rear end often grows out of proportion to the rest of the car. The IS C's overall length grows a little more than two inches, and it shows. It's also impossible to hide the massive cut lines for the trunk lid, which only adds to the feeling of extra mass. Then you add 400 pounds to the curb weight, and that extra mass becomes a real issue, especially in car packing a 204-hp V6.

To be fair, the car looks sharp from the front three-quarter angle, and--like all good convertibles--is fine with the top down. It also is fitted with some damn nice equipment--the super-powerful and clean sound of the Mark Levinson audio system is worth the money, along with the strong navigation system and the adaptive headlights which both do a great job of helping guide and light the way forward.

If your tastes run to luxury and you're willing to forego serious power to get everything for less than $50,000, the IS 250C is a good option.

Lexus Hybrid Adds Economy To Luxury

The Lexus RX 450H shows just how far hybrids have come. It was the first luxury crossover SUV as well as the first luxury full-hybrid SUV, and it couldn’t be more different from the teeny Insight or even the first-generation Prius, which absolutely defined dorky in automotive terms.

The RX crossovers have been a huge success among upscale drivers, and with the RX 450H, they can have their luxury SUV steak with a side order of smug frugality. Instead of the non-hybrid RX 350 with its 18 city, 25 highway fuel mileage, RX 450H breaks out with 30 city and 29 highway.

That difference probably won’t pay back the $7,000 extra cost over the regular gas-powered car for a whole lotta years unless gas prices spike into the stratosphere, but there is the daily psychological benefit of driving lean and clean. Plus, those sublime interludes when the Lexus is cruising through city streets in near silence on electric power only.

The Lexus RS was completely restyled for 2010, with a sleeker exterior and a more luxurious interior for its third generation. For many people, the RX pushes all the right buttons for versatility, accommodations, refinement and luxury.
The ride is soft and cornering is accompanied by plenty of body roll from the hefty SUV. But what it may lack in drivability, RX makes up for in cushy comfort. If insulation from the rough edges of the outside world is what you desire, then here it is, in spades.

The hybrid drive is generally seamless, though there is some jerkiness as the RX shifts between the electric motor and the gas engine. At low speeds, electric power become the only motivation up to about 40 mph, when the gas engine cuts in. At traffic lights and other stops, the engine shuts down to save fuel.

In the city and suburbs is where you save the bulk of your gas money. On the highway, it is what it is, though on downhill grades the engine will turn itself off until it’s needed again. A nicely designed video graphic helps the driver monitor the hybrid functionality around town, and saving gas can become something of a game to see how well you can do.

Acceleration is decent, though if you go poking too hard on the throttle at start ups, you’ll foil the fuel savings. Throttle response is fairly languid, anyway. The continuously variable automatic transmission is designed to make the most of the hybrid’s functionality, but it sets up an annoying drone when the gas engine is running.

Parent company Toyota has been taking its lumps lately, but the carmaker and its luxury division Lexus still makes some very good vehicles. Case in point: the Lexus LS full-size luxury sedan scores a near-flawless 99 on Consumer Reports 100-point scale.

Toyota's recall mess has caused some problems, though. Toyota would have had four cars in this Top 10 list instead of just two. Two vehicles -- the Rav4 and Highlander SUVs -- have had their recommendations suspended as a result of recalls that resulted in "stop sale" orders by the carmaker.

Some of you will remember that from 2001 to 2005, Lexus sold a wagon variant of the IS, dubbed SportCross. Unfortunately, relatively dismal sales numbers didn't really make a business case for keeping that car alive, and Lexus canned it when the second-generation IS debuted in 2006. However, all hope of seeing a SportCross redux has not been lost – Autocar is reporting that the third-generation IS, set to arrive in 2011, could spawn a wagon variant once again.

Now, let's be realistic. If Lexus does build an IS SportCross again, it probably won't make it to American soil. Why? In Europe, wagons are hot sellers, with the BMW 3 Series Touring and Audi A4 Avant leading the pack. Lexus even admits that not offering a wagon in Europe has hurt overall sales of the car. Mercedes-Benz made a similar decision with the current-generation C-Class to only offer the wagon version in Europe, while in previous years, the C-Class Estate could be found at American dealerships as well.

When Toyota debuted the production version of its Lexus CT 200h compact hybrid late last month, it was almost certainly destined to be a European-only vehicle. European buyers love smaller vehicles and hatchbacks in general, and the vehicle didn’t seem likely to appeal to the buying tastes of traditional U.S. Lexus buyers.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case now. Following the success of its midsize Lexus HS 250h hybrid which slots in below ES 350, Toyota has confirmed that the compact CT 200h will come to the U.S. in 2011. According to Edmunds Inside Line, Lexus officials in the U.S. practically had to beg the execs in Japan to get the sporty vehicle to appeal to a younger clientele.

BMW has the 1-Series, Audi has the A3, and the U.S. officials too wanted a vehicle in the same mold. With the exception of the IS range and the ultra-exotic LFA, Lexus doesn’t have anything in its lineup that would exactly raise the pulse of many younger buyers.

The new Lexus GX460, showcased at December’s Dubai Motor Show, has been launched in the Middle East.

The GX460, based on the fourth generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, combines the inherent strengths of the off-roader with luxury and prestige of a Lexus. The SUV will fill the gap between the high-end LX570 and the crossover RX350.

The GX460 shares most of its underpinnings with the Toyota Prado including the 292bhp, 4.6-litre V8 engine, the six-speed automatic transmission with 4WD and all the off-road oriented techno wizardry.

However, it sets itself apart from the Prado thanks to a mildly revised exterior and plush interior, which are differently laid out than the Prado. Premium plastics, wood trim, chrome and leather abound giving the cabin an upmarket feel.

The Lexus comes in a choice of three dual combination interior colours. The third row seats feature a power flush-with-floor function, which automatically folds and stows the seats flush with the floor at the touch of a button. Lexus, and its parent company, Toyota, seem bent on producing an SUV or crossover for every possible market niche. Between the two, if you count the Matrix (which is basically a small crossover), they offer no fewer than 10 distinct models.

Filling the gap between Lexus's car-based RX crossover and its top-dog LX SUV, the mid-sized Lexus GX line has been with us for more than six years. Still, you'd be forgiven for not ever having seen one; of the 15,802 vehicles Lexus sold in 2009, just 198 were GX 470s. Admittedly, this was the final year of that model's cycle; after a thorough redesign for 2010, Lexus expects to sell 600 GX 460s.

Those who follow such things may have noticed the slight name change. In Lexus nomenclature, model names for non-hybrids reflect their engines' displacement, and last year's 4.7-litre V8 has been replaced by a 4.6-litre unit.

This is not a loss. Essentially the flagship LS 460's engine, the GX 460's "1UR-FE" V8 provides gains of 38 horsepower and six lb.-ft. of torque (to 301 and 329, respectively), while returning 11 per cent better fuel economy. Lexus claims that at 14.1 L/100 km in the city and 9.8 L/100 km on the highway (20/29 m.p.g.), it's best-in-class, although the GX does still require premium fuel. Unfortunately, there are no official plans to join similar models from Mercedes and Audi in offering a diesel alternative.

First official pictures of Japanese 1-Series released ahead of its Geneva show debut

The hybrid revolution is gathering momentum! These are the first official pictures of the Lexus CT 200h - the firm's first compact five-door car and the first full hybrid to enter a segment that until now has been ruled by the BMW 1-Series and Audi A3.

Previewed by the LF-Ch Concept shown at Frankfurt last year, the production car, which will debut at Geneva next week, has retained many of the show car's design cues, albeit toned down for the showroom. Up front there's Lexus' familiar family face, but the rest of the hatchback design, including a stylish wraparound rear windscreen, represents new territory for the Japanese manufacturer.

The cabin uses a plethora of luxury materials to compete with its premium rivals, and there's a useful 700-litres of boot space with the rear seats folded. Infotainment features are displayed on the eight-inch LCD screen and controlled via the Remote Touch pad which works much like a computer mouse.

Lexus already has ten years experience with hybrids and the CT 200h uses the latest iteration of the technology. A 1.8-litre VVTi petrol engine works alongside a electric motor to produce similar performance to a 2.0-litre engine, but class-leading CO2 emissions. The system is capable of working in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both.

Even though the United States was the first country to get the Lexus brand (in 1989), the luxury Toyota brand will be ditching us with the upcoming Lexus CT 200h. Scheduled to make its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March, Inside Line has learned that stateside consumers are unlikely to see the new compact hybrid.

“There are no plans, at present, to bring this vehicle to the U.S.,” Toyota spokesman Curt McAllister said.

Lexus has introduced an all-new, second-generation GX 460 luxury utility vehicle for 2010 that is more powerful, more efficient, quieter and more luxurious than the GX 470 model it replaces. The 2010 GX 460 achieves all of these significant developments while its 10 standard airbags and the available Pre-Collision System help enhance safety.

Positioned between the brand’s LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle and unibody-based RX models, the 2010 GX 460 combines “right sized” midsize packaging with family-friendly comfort and premium craftsmanship. The GX 460 has a standard seven-passenger configuration. Once again built with rugged body-on-frame construction, the 2010 GX 460 is also equipped with full-time four-wheel drive and the advanced Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) to help provide both exceptional on-road ride and handling and true off-road capability.

The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is powered by an all-new 4.6-liter V8 that is both more powerful and more efficient than the 4.7-liter V8 it replaces. The new engine produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and is teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. Combined city/highway fuel economy is improved by 13 percent to an EPA-estimated 17 mpg (vs. 15 mpg in the 2009 GX 470) — better than other V8 luxury utility vehicles and competitive with some six-cylinder models. The GX 460 has an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

With the same vehicle footprint as the GX 470 it replaces, the 2010 GX 460 provides a more versatile interior. The second row seat slides 4.1 inches fore/aft to maximize passenger and cargo carrying ability. The foldable and reclining second row seats also feature a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats. The rear door window uses a flip-up glass panel for added convenience.

Luxury is enhanced in the 2010 GX 460 by an even quieter cabin, as well as new additional standard features and options. The 2010 GX 460 features standard heated and ventilated front seats for example. Among the new luxury options are semi-aniline leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated outer second-row seats. New multimedia features – both standard and optional – expand onboard family entertainment choices.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The 2010 GX 460 takes its model designation from an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine. The new 32-valve DOHC engine features aluminum alloy cylinder heads and block with dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i), which controls valve timing and overlap on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, fuel efficiency and emissions. (The previous 4.7 had VVT only on the intake camshafts.) Peak torque is also up for the new 4.6, now 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm vs. 323 lb.-ft. at 3,400 rpm for the 4.7-liter engine.

The new 4.6-liter V8 is teamed to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, compared to a five-speed automatic with the previous 4.7-liter, benefiting both performance and fuel economy. The new transmission fits in the same space as the previous five- speed and features a higher top gear ratio. The new powertrain helps make the 2010 GX 460 feel more responsive in everyday driving and quieter than the previous model. The 2010 GX 460 retains the same 6,500-lb. towing capacity as the GX 470 offered.

The GX 460 comes equipped with standard full-time four-wheel drive using an electronically controlled transfer case and a TORSEN® torque-sensing center differential. It also offers a low range for off-road driving. The TORSEN differential distributes power 40:60 under most driving conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip.

The ability to change to a 30:70 ratio during steering maneuvers helps enhance vehicle tracking through curves. If the rear wheels spin, the center differential can change the ratio to 50:50 to help control the slippage. The TORSEN differential also helps make the GX 460 less prone to slippage caused by sudden changes in road-surface conditions, such as driving through a puddle or over an ice patch. The rear differential has also been strengthened for 2010.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is one of the few premium brand luxury utility vehicles that can deliver genuine trail driving capability. Combining that capability with Lexus luxury and on-road performance makes it even more exceptional. Lexus studied vehicle usage of current owners and found that many use their GX models for family hauling during the week and vacations and camping trips on weekends. They often tow a boat or watercraft and sometimes drive to areas with unpaved and rugged trails.

Like the previous GX 470, the 2010 GX 460 has robust body-on-frame construction and does not compromise on- or off-road performance; the high-strength chassis and dynamic suspension control technology support both.

The available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with three modes: Normal, Sport and Comfort, and independent front suspension delivers a smooth on-road ride without compromising rugged off-road capabilities. The 2010 GX 460 rides on larger standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 tires, versus 17-inch wheels for the 2009 GX 470 model.

The power rack-and-pinion steering system helps make it easier to maneuver the GX 460 in tight spaces. Rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) enhances the vehicle’s flexibility in a wide range of driving situations.

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
KDSS is standard on the GX 460, and enhanced for 2010 with steering and yaw sensors. By adjusting roll resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars, KDSS can reduce maximum body-roll angle by as much as 50 percent to help enhance both on-road handling response and off-highway capability.

Using hydraulic cylinders acting on each stabilizer bar and linked by a pressure-sensing valve, KDSS reduces the degree of roll stiffness provided by the stabilizer bars in response to changing road conditions and driver inputs. Because KDSS allows the stabilizer bars to disengage in certain situations like off-road driving, the nominal stiffness of the bars can be notably increased to help reduce body-tilt and improve on-road handling.

During on-road cornering, when both front and rear cylinders are compressed, no fluid flows in the system and the stabilizer bars work conventionally to help reduce body lean. In off-road driving situations, KDSS allows the wheels on each axle to move with a larger degree of side- to-side independence, helping to minimize any tendency for wheel lift. When the GX 460 encounters an uneven surface, one compressed cylinder causes fluid to flow between the front and rear cylinders, allowing the stabilizer bars to move freely. That action increases wheel travel and articulation and helps to equalize wheel loading.

Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control
In addition to KDSS, the 2010 Lexus GX 460 offers optional Crawl Control a new technology that helps make driving off-road easier. The Crawl Control feature automatically modulates the throttle and brake, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Crawl Control is also useful for helping to free the vehicle from sand, mud or snow.

When the transmission is shifted into low range, Crawl Control regulates engine speed and output, along with braking force, to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of five low- speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over very rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle, or brake, pedals. Crawl Control also actuates the front and rear “virtual” locking differentials to help reduce tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior.

Without canceling Crawl Control, the driver can reduce vehicle speed by braking or adjusting the crawling speed with a selector switch. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is designed to augment the low-speed descending ability of the transmission’s low range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with no intervention from the driver. Active traction control (A-TRAC) provides the traction benefits of having locking front and rear differentials, but with lower weight. The system can apply the brake to a slipping wheel, while transferring torque to the wheels with better traction.

A steering angle indicator in the gauge panel shows the driver at a glance which direction the front wheels are pointing – useful for situations where this can be difficult to discern, such as driving off-road or when parking.

Safety/Security Features
The GX 460, like all Lexus models, is equipped with an array of dynamic safety systems. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps keep the GX 460 going on its intended course by detecting front- and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with a combination of torque intervention and individual wheel braking. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) utilizes the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and distributes proper brake force between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions and wheel-load.

Brake Assist (BA) is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking, and if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes a class-leading standard 10 airbags: dual front and side airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; second-row seat-mounted side airbags, and roll-sensing side curtain airbags covering all two or three rows. The front airbags are designed to inflate according to collision severity. The roll-sensing side curtain airbags are designed to deploy when a severe tilt angle, roll or lateral G-force is detected.

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The multi-information display within the combination meter will show a car icon with the selected following distance. If, based on a variety of inputs, PCS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system preemptively retracts the front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

In addition, an available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is now available for the 2010 GX 460. Using two small cameras mounted at the front of the vehicle that work in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar, the system is sensitive enough to detect certain nonmetallic objects. The Driver Monitor System uses a third camera, mounted on the steering column, monitors the orientation of the driver’s face.

If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, then it alerts the driver, first with a warning chime and a flashing light. As the car gets closer to the obstacle, PCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own.

To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response. At the same time, PCS automatically retracts the front seatbelts and prepares the brake system to respond with full force when activated by the driver in anticipation of a possible impact.

LDA alerts the driver of unintentional lane departure by sounding a warning buzzer and displaying an alert. It does not steer the vehicle independently and it requires the driver to maintain active steering control.

New for 2010, active front headrests move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain lower speed rear-end collisions when the force of the occupant’s body is applied to the seat back. Also new, the available Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), illuminates a turn or curve as the driver steers into it and includes high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor Package includes new Intelligent High Beams with headlamp cleaners automatically adjust the high beams to avoid blinding drivers in oncoming vehicles. The cleaners help ensure optimal headlight performance in all weather conditions.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The GX 460 presents a luxurious passenger environment with the fit and finishes expected in a Lexus. Standard features include: eight-way power-adjustable, heated/ventilated front seats; automatic climate control; leather trimmed seats and surfaces; steering wheel audio controls; rain-sensing windshield wipers; power moonroof; a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; memory system for the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirrors; and an overhead console with integrated HomeLink® transmitter.

Equipped for family multimedia entertainment, the 2010 GX 460 comes standard with a Lexus Premium nine-speaker audio system with integrated iPod® control and XM® Radio receiver. Bluetooth® capability includes music streaming and hands free phone.

Lexus designed the 2010 GX 460 to combine function and elegance, with unmistakable brand identity rooted in the L-finesse design language. The overall effect conveys the vehicle’s full-range capability and luxury credentials. A key goal of the designers was to have the vehicle create the impression of being sculpted from a single block of metal.

The distinctive grille features three horizontal bars and, upon closer inspection, intricate detail and texture that conveys renowned Lexus attention to detail. Distinctive character lines on the hood and a chrome surround frame the grille. The front bumper features standard integrated fog lamps.

Functional design elements include low-profile roof rails and an acoustic insulation windshield that help reduce wind noise. Tasteful luxury touches abound, including green-tint UV protection front glass, privacy glass on rear windows, and running board courtesy lamps.

Interior Design
The 2010 GX 460 provides the luxury appointments and workmanship of a Lexus sedan. Reduced drivetrain noise, especially in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range, combined with new sound
insulating, dampening and absorbing materials used throughout the frame and body, provide an even quieter cabin than before. Adopting a feature from the flagship LS sedans, the GX 460 uses one-touch power windows with motors that reduce speed near the closure point to minimize the sound of the window closing.

The instrument panel is designed to appear as if formed from a single metal bar and is arranged to place all vital controls within easy reach. Optitron® instrument gauges are a traditional and functional Lexus design element. Leather-trimmed seat facings, headrests, armrests, door trim, shift knob and steering wheel also add to the Lexus touch. For 2010, expanded wood trim, instrument panel stitching and soft-touch surfaces enhance the luxury feel. The GX offers three interior colors for 2010: Ecru, Black and Sepia.

XM Sports and Stocks features in-vehicle updates on sports and stocks so drivers can stay connected to their favorite teams and investment data while on the road. XM Sports provides game results and schedules for up to five personally selected North American national league sports teams while XM Stocks supplies data for up to 10 personally selected stocks. After inputting their selections, drivers can access the reports either by the navigation system, or by using the voice command system, adding a new level of flexibility.

XM NavTraffic and XM NavWeather are available via individual XM subscriptions while XM Sports and Stocks is included with an XM Radio subscription. All XM services offer complimentary 90 day trial subscriptions.

Lexus finally unveiled its latest super sports cars, the Lexus LFA, at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Lexus LFA will be powered by a V10 4.8-liter engine that generates an output of 552 hp and 480 Nm of torque. The Lexus LFA maximum speed is 325 km / h (202 mph) and can do 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds.

The engine of the Lexus LFA asociadoa a box of 6-speed sequential automatic that sends power to the rear wheels through a differential divided. The weight distribution of the Lexus LFA is 48:52 on the front and rear. The Lexus LFA weighs 1480 kg, which means that the model has a radius of 373bhp per tonne and an output of 115 bhp per liter.

This puts it among the highest of the current super sports cars. The company said the Lexus LFA is a demonstration of a compact, lightweight vehicle, and the V10 is as big as a V8 and weighs the same as a regular V6. The engine in the Lexus LFA was developed in collaboration with Yamaha.

To reduce the weight of the vehicle, the chassis and structure of LFA Lexus is made in Carbon Fiber and fiberglass reinforced plastic, which is four times stronger than aluminum and is able to reduce by 100 kg total weight of the model.

The company said it will build only 500 units of the Lexus LFA, a number of 20 units per month. Each engine is built by one engineer, who will sign it. The price of the Lexus LFA for the European market is of 368,000 euros.

Lexus Denies Rumoured “GS-F” Model Will Use LFA V10

RUMOURS IN THE in the Japanese press this week suggested that Lexus is preparing a hard-core GS F model to sit alongside its M3-fighting IS F, powered by a version of the LFA’s 4.8 litre V10 engine.

Lexus’ European press office has thrown water on the rumours, however. In a short message issued on the company’s Twitter feed, Lexus said that the “LFA V10 is bespoke to LFA,” indicating that the 412kW bent-ten won’t be used by any vehicle other than the marque’s performance flagship.

Interestingly, Lexus declined to comment on the existence of a GS F project in its brief message. Is the company working on a hi-po luxury sedan to rival the likes of BMW’s M5 and Benz’s E63 AMG? We don’t know, but what is certain is that if a GS F is indeed in the works, it won’t be receiving a heart transplant from its supercar sibling.

The current M5 uses a naturally-aspirated V10 of similar capacity to the LFA’s motor, but the company is reportedly moving to a twin-turbocharged V8 for the next generation model.

Mercedes-Benz is also considering a similar tactic for its AMG models, meaning Lexus may soon be returning to forced induction for its future performance vehicles.

Yesterday we reported on rumors that the Lexus LFA’s 4.8-liter V10 engine would find its way into the upcoming GS F. Today Lexus of Europe is denying those rumors. Via Twitter, Lexus of Europe said that the high-revving V10 engine is bespoke, hinting that its pretty much exclusive to the Japanese brand’s new supercar.

We can’t say we’re surprised. While using the new high-tech engine in other models would help to cut down production costs and create a nice brand continuity, it also has the possibility of devaluing the LFA. After all, it doesn’t make much sense if you can get a car with the same engine for less than a quarter of the LFA’s $375,000 price tag.

Plus, while the 4.8-liter mill does make an impressive 553-hp, its torque of just 354 ft-lbs (which comes on at high rpm) is not only far less the the competition like the MErcedes E63 and Cadillac CTS-V, but would feel even less spectacular in a heavier platform.

Lexus Park Lane has been selected by Lexus as the centre for all European sales of its V10-powered LFA supercar launched at the Tokyo motor show.

Just 500 LFAs will be built, with only a proportion of this total made available to European customers.

A separate showroom has been set up within Lexus Park Lane and a ‘personal liaison manager' has been appointed to handle sales. The showroom also has a ‘VIP selection room' where customers can discuss their requirements in ‘discreet' surroundings.

Devshi Varsani will handle LFA sales at the dealership. He said: "The LFA is an exceptional car for Lexus and is attracting huge interest right around the world.

"I am hugely excited at the prospect of introducing customers to the car and feel as though the world is looking over my shoulder."

Orders will be taken from March or April next year. Deliveries to customers begin in 2011 and continue for two years. On signing a contract, the customer will be required to make a deposit, said Lexus.

For several years Lexus has offered an Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS; also called Intelligent Parking Assist) option on its Lexus LS 460 and Lexus LS 600h, and the same system is offered in the 2010 Toyota Prius.

The Lexus/Toyota system was, and still is, the first and only system in the U.S. market to automatically steer the vehicle into both parallel and back-in parking spots.

Now Ford is also offering its Active Park Assist feature on several vehicles, including the 2010 Ford Escape, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT. The system uses ultrasonic sensors, rather than cameras, to make the parking spot identification more accurate, by most accounts.

The Ford system gives a simple command on the instrument panel and uses ultrasonic sensors as well as camera sensors. Ford has shown its system to take 15-30 seconds, but we ended up taking much longer with the Lexus system because of the need to manually adjust the outline of the space itself almost each time.

Lexus has revealed the second-generation of its GX midsized luxury SUV, the GX 460, ahead of its official debut next week at the LA Auto Show. The same size as the model it replaces, the new GX 460 is still an old-fashioned, body-on-frame design that shares a platform with the redesigned Toyota 4Runner. Both are traditionally capable off-roaders. But it promises more refinement, through technology and conveniences. For example, a power-folding third-row seat folds flat into the floor, rather than up against the sides as the old one did. And that is just the beginning.

The name change also represents moving to a new 4.6-liter V8, which makes 301 hp, up from 263. The standard transmission is a new six-speed automatic–upgraded from last year’s five-speed. EPA fuel economy estimates are 15 mpg city and 20 highway, for a combined 17 mpg; the last GX returned 15 mpg combined.

A host of new high-tech features provide protective systems for everything from off-road driving to on-road crash performance.

Previously optional, the new Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) is now standard. It hydraulically controls the anti-roll bars for reduced body lean in corners, and disengages the bars for greater off-road articulation. The vehicle also has downhill assist control to automatically limit descent speeds on steep slippery grades off-road. The Crawl Control, trickled down from the Land Cruiser, is a feature that automatically controls the throttle to maintain a set speed on slow off-road ascents. Crawl Control engages automatically when low-range is selected and the crawl speed can be adjusted manually. Hill start assist keeps the vehicle from rolling back when starting on an uphill.

Things are a little rocky for Toyota of late, prompting among other things company president Akio Toyoda to announce plans to review and possibly trim the line-up of full-frame trucks. Meanwhile, Lexus has just revealed the next generation of its "midsize" sport-utility vehicle: The all-new 2010 Lexus GX460--named for the displacement of its V-8 engine--replaces the GX470 with an all-new engine, both more efficient and more powerful than the 4.7-liter it replaces--while keeping the stout body-on-frame construction.

Although the 4.6-liter V-8 produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, the Lexus GX460 is about more than just power. There's also standard seven-passenger capacity and full-time four-wheel drive, and the GX460 has active suspension that changes the degree of roll stiffness with an adjustable anti-roll bar. Lexus says the system, which it calls Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, or KDSS, can reduce lean in corners by up to fifty percent while still maintaining the suspension flexibility needed for off road use. Stability control, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution are all standard as well.

The Specs

How closely related is the GX 460 to the new 4Runner? Well, they both ride on the same 109.8-inch wheelbase and the slight differences in other specifications can be attributed to slight differences in bumper, roof rack and wheel design. The outgoing GX 470 rode on a 109.8-inch wheelbase too. This is not the case of a vehicle growing larger.

However, it is a vehicle that's gotten heavier. According to Lexus, the 2009 GX 470 weighed in at a full-figured 4871 pounds while the base 2010 GX 460 is an obese 5305 pounds. That's a 434-pound increase.

Fortunately, the GX 460 is blessed with a stout heart. The GX 470's iron-block "2UZ-FE" 4.7-liter DOHC V8 has been replaced by the new, all-aluminum "1UR-FE" 4.6-liter V8 DOHC V8 (which is not, incidentally, the same 4.6-liter V8 installed in Lexus cars). Featuring continuous variable valve timing and a thirst for 91-octane or better fuel (but not utilizing direct injection), the new engine is rated at 301 hp at 5500 rpm and 329 lb-ft of peak torque at 3500 rpm. That's a substantial improvement over the outgoing motor's 263-hp at 5400 rpm, but only a modest bump up from the old engine's 323 lb-ft of peak torque at 3400 rpm.

Strangely though, the GX 460's engine lags 9 hp behind the essentially identical 4.6-liter V8 installed in the 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup, and the Tundra engine is rated to operate on 87-octane fuel. Intake and exhaust-system differences are the likely power thieves here.

The sole transmission behind that new engine is the same six-speed automatic used in the Tundra equipped with the 4.6-liter V8 and a step up from the five-speed used in the GX 470. It shifts so smoothly that its operation is effectively undetectable. The full-time all-wheel drive system has an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case and a locking center differential. The standard 265/60R18 mud-and-snow tires aren't particularly aggressive by off-road standards, but the drivetrain makes every effort to help them gain traction.

Considering the amount of heft the GX 460's engine must lug, that it achieves an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway is surprising, if not impressive. And the GX 460 is rated to tow up to 6500 pounds when equipped with the correct hitch.

The suspension uses double A-arms in front with a solid axle on coil springs located by four links in back—hardly exotic stuff. But it's complemented by a four-wheel Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system and, on the rear wheels, Adjustable Height Control (AHC). Those both seem to work well enough, but the star here is the same Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) used on the off-road ready Trail version of the 4Runner.

The KDSS system manages the connection of the stabilizer bars to the GX 460 through the use of electronically controlled hydraulic cylinders at the points where the bars would otherwise conventionally mount to the frame. Extending the hydraulics has virtually the same effect as disconnecting the stabilizer bars and increasing suspension travel when the going gets hairy.

So that's the substance and steak of the GX 460. The sizzle comes in the details.

For some, there might be too much technology crammed into the GX 460. The dashboard, center stack and steering wheel are an absolute riot of buttons, with knobs and sliding panels that hide more buttons and knobs. Of course there's a navigation system, redundant audio controls, switches for scrolling through information displays, more switches that tell the all-wheel-drive system what to do, and, optional in Premium-grade models, a package that bundles a driver monitor, lane-departure alert system, "intelligent" high-beam headlamps and a dynamic radar-based cruise control system. You don't have to be a Luddite to be overwhelmed by the tsunami of tech, but if you are one you've got a head start.

The G X 460 replaces the GX 470 and the new 4.6-liter V-8 also used in the Toyota Tundra pickup replaces the -- duh -- 4.7-liter V-8. That inefficient 4.7 actually got worse fuel economy in the Tundra usage than the 5.7-liter V-8.

The change adds adds power: the 4.6 in the '10 GX 460 is rated 301 horsepower and 329 pounds-feet of torque vs. the 4.7's just 263 hp and 323 lbs.-ft. in the '09 GX 470.

It also ups the fuel economy: the 4.6 is rated 15 mpg in town, 20 on the highway, 17 combined (5.88 gallons per 100 miles) . That's up from the 4.7's 14/18/15 (6.67 gal./100 mi.)

The GX, similar to the Toyota 4Runner that no longer offers a V-8, is a mid-size SUV with full-time four-wheel drive. The vehicle continues to be a truck-style, body-on-frame machine in a time when most buyers are shifting to unibody crossover SUVs. A third-row seat now is standard and comes with power-fold.

Lexus LFA is lease only in US

The Lexus LFA supercar will only be available to lease in the US, the company has confirmed.

Only 500 units of the £343,000 supercar will be built, and any customers ordering one in the US will have to wait two years before seeing their names in the log book.

Car collecting is big business in the US and a Toyota UK source told Autocar that the decision has been taken to prevent buyers there from keeping their LFAs as unused museum pieces, waiting to appreciate in value.

The move has also been designed to fend off speculators buying the car and then selling it on almost immediately for a large profit. Lexus’s US vice president for sales Brian Smith said speculators buying and selling LFAs would be “damaging the ownership experience”.

“If someone buys it in the first month and then decides to sell it, that could be damaging for the ownership experience,” he said.

“If it is not controlled and hits the speculation market, all bets are off. We want people out driving the car and not parking it in a museum or selling it at an inflated price.”

We got to see the Lexus LF-A concept at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show. And catch a few eyes it definitely did. The new design philosophy visible in the LF-A was called L-Finesse by Lexus.

While the initial information was that it would be a V8 powering this supercar, the latest rumors are that the LF-A would be powered by a hybrid engine. The V8 would be there, but there would be an electric motor too - and the specifications for that is not available yet.

The V8 would be a 5 litre engine producing 435 bhp. The power distribution and how big a role the electric motor would play is unknown yet. Well, a hybrid supercar is in some ways a little late to the party - especially when an all-electric supercar (?), The Tesla Electric Roadster, has just been launched.

Anyway, top speed of the LF-A is expected to be in excess of 200 mph, and the 0-60 acceleration time would be under 4 seconds. It is nine inches shorter than the Porsche 911 Turbo, and at 48 inches, almost the same height as a Ferrari F430.

Lexus believes that the V8 would help them bring Toyota's Formula One experience to the supercar. The hybrid LF-A might make its appearance at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

With supercar good-looks, the V10 LF-A has methodically marched from concept, to prototype, to imminent-super-secret production model, to endangered species list. The main hurdle seems to be the $225,000 cost which Toyota views as prohibitively expensive and unprofitable. Which is a cop-out of course. Regardless of the economy, there seems to always be an inexhaustible flow of wealthy buyers IF you have something worthy of their attention. The real question is whether Lexus is ready to produce a supercar.

Though Toyota maintains that the LF-A will remain only a development platform they are certainly parading it around like the next big thing, including a sighting by myself at the U.S. Open a couple of weeks ago. The “F” logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle’s status as a part of the “F” special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process.

Compared to the coupe concept that was introduced last year, the LF-A Roadster features a number of design differences including reshaped headlights, a new front fascia, modified side skirts and air intakes, and a somewhat reshaped trunk. The LF-A Roadster is still based on the same lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which maintains strength and rigidity even in topless form. Like its coupe sibling, the LF-A Roadster is also powered by a high-revving 5 liter V10 engine capable of more than 500 horsepower and speeds greater than 200 mph. It is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what engineers refer to as a front-mid configuration controlled by paddle shifters. The LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing. The rear is also marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car’s two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster’s aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells.

While there’s still no definitive sign of a production version of a Lexus LF-A supercar, admirers can only hope that Lexus sees the need to having a high performance, limited production supercar in the company stable.

All-New 2010 Lexus RX Photos

As is typical these days, photos of new models always seem to show up somewhere before the car is officially unveiled. Well this time we have our first look at the all-new 2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h before its official unveiling at the LA Auto Show next month.

These photos scanned from a Japanese brochure show what lies in store for Lexus' most popular SUV. The 2010 RX is going to keep its same basic shape but with some new creases and angles to keep it looking fresh. Inside there is a new dash that is more stylish than the current gen.

It's been rumored that the new RX is going to grow in size to accommodate a new third row seat, but we'll have to wait until next month to find out.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The LX 570's 5.7-liter V8 delivers the punch and towing power demanded in this segment. The new, high-tech powerplant produces 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and peak torque of 403 lb.-ft at 3,600 rpm. Crucial to LX customers who tow with their vehicles, 90 percent of peak torque is available at just 2,200 RPM.

The electronically-controlled transmission's control unit estimates road conditions and predicts the driver's intention to select the appropriate gear ratio for the vehicle's speed and the driving conditions. A sequential shift mode allows the driver to select gears manually. Even at very low speeds, such as trail driving, the transmission operates smoothly and imperceptibly.

The LX 570's transfer case provides full-time four-wheel drive that is equally adept at handling the rigors of slippery winter weather or deep mud or snow. A 2.618:1 low-range ratio is available for challenging driving surfaces. The system uses a TORSEN® limited-slip locking center differential to distribute power 40:60 front-to-rear, directing more power to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur. Four-wheel Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) employs both brake and throttle intervention to help control wheel spin. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps maintain directional control during cornering and can be disengaged via the “Trac off” switch.

The Crawl Control feature provides improved throttle modulation when maneuvering over rough, uneven or difficult surfaces. When the transmission is shifted into low range, Crawl Control regulates engine speed and output, along with braking force, to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of three low-speed settings. Crawl Control also actuates a set of virtual locking differentials to help reduce tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior.

Without canceling Crawl Control mode, the driver can reduce vehicle speed by braking or adjust the crawling speed with a selector switch. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The LX 570's highly capable chassis is equipped with an advanced suspension system. Body-on-frame construction provides ruggedness and durability in extreme driving conditions, plus impressive towing capability and ride isolation characteristics. Towing capacity is 8,500 pounds. An electro-hydraulic system with four-wheel Active Height Control (AHC) and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) reacts more quickly and allows for a greater range of adjustment than the system used in the previous LX model.

Applying advanced computer aided engineering and lightweight components, engineers developed an all-new frame structure that uses lightweight, high-strength steel. Deeper, wider frame longitudinal members help to provide enhanced safety. The new frame was tested over some of the worst roads in Australia, plus desert areas of the U.S. and other parts of the world in conditions where other SUVs could not go. The body utilizes welded high-strength sheet steel, especially in the A-, B-, C- and D-pillars and in the rocker area to reduce weight and increase rigidity.

Lexus unveiled the all-new 2010 RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The RX supposedly pioneered the car-based luxury SUV segment when it launched in 1998 for he American market. The new model continues that old formula almost exactly.

The 2010 Lexus RX 350 will be powered by an improved 275 hp 3.5-litre V6 engine mated to a sequential-shift 6-speed automatic gearbox. The all-wheel-drive version will feature an Active Torque Control AWD system that optimizes torque depending on driving conditions, resulting in improved efficiency and performance. The Americans also get a front-wheel-drive basic version.

The 2010 Lexus RX 450h is powered by a 295 hp hybrid 3.5-litre V6, and features a front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive hybrid drive system, which supplies the rear wheels with the optimal amount of torque as conditions demand. Unlike mechanical AWD systems that reduce fuel efficiency via added weight and friction, the RX 450h’s rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery more effectively.

Both RX models feature a redesigned double-wishbone rear suspension. The new design allows for five percent more cargo volume and easier loading. The front McPherson strut suspension geometry was optimized. We believe it continues to be comfort-biased.

The five-seater RX models possess a number of Lexus-first technologies, such as an available hard-disk navigation system with an all-new “Remote Touch” controller. Positioned on the centre console, Remote Touch is used as a computer mouse. While RX will feature voice recognition as standard, the new navigation system will also include a new casual language voice-recognition system that acknowledges conversational commands. Standard XM® satellite-radio capability as well as XM NavTraffic and new NavWeather features are available.

Standard 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels are an inch larger than before, with optional 19-inch aluminium-alloy wheels available. The RX 450h hybrid will have its own unique styling features, including an exclusive grille, hybrid badging including blue-trimmed Lexus logos, unique front bumper, a special 19-inch optional wheel design, blue-tinted headlamps and tail-lights, and optional LED headlights.

The new RX is available with a selection of luxury and sport option packages, which include features like Lexus’ exclusive Mark Levinson® Surround Sound system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, dynamic radar cruise control, and a Sports Package featuring a sport-tuned suspension. Also offered is a wide-angle side view monitor with a camera located under the passenger side-view mirror.

Safety features include the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system that integrates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), ABS, Hill Assist Control and Traction Control. The available Pre-Collision System (PCS) relies on millimeter-wave radar technology to recognize a possible frontal collision and primes the brake assist and retracts the driver’s and front passenger’s seat-belt in anticipation of the crash. An intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is available with HID headlights. An optional new automatic high-beam system detects light from oncoming vehicles, preceding vehicles or ambient sources and automatically switches from high to low beams. Passive safety features include a class-leading 10 standard airbags and front-seat active headrests.

The all-new 2010 Lexus RX will go on sale next February in the United States, while the GCC-spec version will hit Dubai streets later in the year, most likely after the summer.

It would seem the Lexus has launched their girly new SUV in Dubai, the 2010 RX350, and did not even tell us. While us being kept in the dark for various products is only getting worse, I heard elsewhere that they plan to target this one towards women, so any men out there who thought about buying an RX — you’ve been warned.

The new GCC-spec 2010 model, launched in March 2009 in the UAE, is powered by a 275 hp 3.5-litre V6, mated to a 6-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive. It can seat five, has 10 standard airbags, and comes with a variety of electronic nannies to keep you from enjoying the drive. To see more photos, see our earlier report on the RX350.

At the Lexus stand during the LA Auto Show today two new RX cars were unveiled. The first is an all-new RX 350, the second a new RX 450h, the latter being a hybrid as denoted by the “h”. RX 350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine producing 275hp, up from 270hp in the current car. It’s mated to a sequential 6-speed ‘box in both FWD and AWD, with the latter featuring Active Torque Control AWD system which optimizes torque for all driving conditions.
For the RX 450h powertrain is very different. Being a hybrid it also uses the 3.5-liter V6 gas engine which runs on the Atkinson cycle with a new inverter for a system power output of 295hp. Twenty seven more horsepower than the previous/current model, plus more efficient. These efficient gains are as a result of, among other innovations, exhaust-heat recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time and an exhaust-gas recirculation setup that lessens engine pumping losses.

The RX 450h’s hybrid system allows for regenerative braking to charge the battery better, for longer running times. 4WD is not permanent; it only kicks in when needed. The rest of the time, which is normal driving conditions, the car is in FWD mode. First-for-Lexus technologies for a greater experience in the RX cars includes a Hard Disk Drive navigation system with a “Remote Touch” controller, voice recognition, XM satellite radio and other cool gadgetry stuff. A class-leading 10 airbags form part of the safety package, so does wide-angle side view monitor and rear-view camera for a bump-free reverse session.

Lexus has previewed an all-wheel drive variant of its LS 460 Luxury Saloon at the Moscow International Motor Show.

LS 460's all-wheel drive system will use a three differential configuration, featuring a compact Torsen® Limited Slip Differential (LSD).

The Torsen® LSD system - shared with the LS 600hL - is designed to provide seamless all-wheel drive, with optimal traction and driving performance. The torque-sensing system generates limited differential torque proportional to the vehicle's drive torque. It will be set up with a front-to-rear torque split that is biased to the rear in the ratio 40:60.

Lexus chief executive John Roca said that Lexus Australia would welcome the all-wheel drive LS 460 in Australia.

"Lexus Australia is currently studying the introduction of the all-wheel drive LS 460 for Australia. If added to the local model line-up, the introduction of LS 460 AWD would coincide with launch of the vehicle in other markets in late 2009," said Roca.

"LS 460 AWD would add another model option for Lexus LS purchasers and provide us with a competitive offering to other all-wheel drive luxury sedans in LS 460's segment," said Roca.

Lexus Announces Prices for 2010 LS 460 and GS Models

Lexus today announced Manufacturer's
Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2010 LS 460 and LS 460 L premium luxury
sedans, GS 350 and GS 460 mid-size luxury sport sedans, and GS 450h mid-size
luxury sport hybrid sedan. The MSRPs do not include a delivery, processing
and handling fee of $875. The GS and LS sedans will arrive at dealerships
later this month.

For 2010, the 2010 LS 460 models receive a revised grille, bumper, and
headlamps, taillamps, license plate surround and exhaust diffusers. In
addition, new side mirrors feature integrated turn signals while the standard
18-inch wheels have a new 10-spoke design. The LS 460 and LS 460 L freshen
their exterior color palette for 2010 with new shades: Peridot Mica, Satin
Cashmere Metallic, Matador Red Mica and Deep Sea Mica. Inside the LS adds an
Eco Drive indicator that can encourage economical driving. LS 460 L models
also receive standard Intuitive Park Assist and Intelligent High-Beam.

The LS 460 rear-wheel drive (RWD) model offers a new Sport Package for 2010.
The Sport Package enhances the overall driving experience with an exclusive
perforated Black/Saddle leather interior with sport front seats, a unique
leather-trimmed steering wheel and paddle shifters for the eight-speed
automatic transmission. It also offers tighter handling with its sport-tuned
air suspension, stabilizer bars and shock absorbers. A unique front grille,
distinctive Aero kit, which features a front lower spoiler, side rocker
panels, and rear lower spoiler, 19-inch 10-split spoke forged wheels, and
Brembo brakes are also included in the package.

The Appearance Package, a stand-alone option for all LS 460 and LS 460 L
models, is also new for 2010 and offers the unique front grille and Aero kit
found in the Sport Package. For RWD models the package also includes 19-inch
five-spoke wheels.

The new Cold Weather Package featuring a deicer, more effective heater and
heavy-duty battery is available for all LS 460 and LS 460 L models.

Sliding floor mats lead to biggest Toyota, Lexus recall

Toyota (TM) is launching its biggest recall ever to prevent sliding floor mats from jamming accelerator pedals, a problem that may have killed four in the crash of a runaway Lexus.

The automaker on Tuesday warned the owners of 3.8 million late-model Toyota and Lexus vehicles to immediately remove any driver's side floor mat. Official notice will go out to owners next week.

The federal government, which also issued a "safety alert" on the mats, says it has 102 reports of jammed accelerators in Toyota and Lexus models, including 13 crashes, five deaths and 17 injuries.

Four died Aug. 28 in a Lexus driven by an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer that crashed at an estimated 120 mph.

In a panicked 911 call, the doomed passengers said the accelerator was stuck and they were unable to turn off the engine. The Lexus was a dealer service loaner that may have had mats from another model.

Lexus floor mat recall announced

The Feds just released the official floor mat recall notice that affects more than 3 million Toyota and Lexus cars that could be at risk for acceleration problems. A couple of weeks ago the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration took extreme steps and announced a rare warning about the situation--telling car owners to just take the mats out until the manufacturer comes up with a plan to deal with the predicament.

Looks like Toyota is still working on a prototype mat to replace the defective ones. In the meantime, the automaker is going to send recall notices that say "take the mats out of your car."

According to the actual notice below, car owners should get that letter in the mail this month. And when Toyota comes up with a new, safe mat, a second notice will be mailed out with info on how to get replacements. So essentially the company is saying, when we figure it out, we'll let you know!

2010 Lexus ES breaks cover

2010 Lexus ES sedan have been revealed. When discussing the Lexus ES sedan, the conversation invariably moves to the Buick’s newLaCrosse and the Lincoln MKZ. It’s not surprising since for several years now, it has been the benchmark for mid-level luxury value.

If you’re in the market for a car of this caliber, then this should be noted for your consideration. Apparently, updates are minor and primarily cosmetic, with the airdam and foglights getting a new treatment, though the grille and headlights stay mostly the same. Side-mirror-mounted indicators are fitted, and the taillights get minor tweaks. Most of the rear fascia stays the same as the 2009 Lexus ES model. Inside, the Lexus ES 350 is mostly unchanged as the layout stays the same but the steering wheel shows a change in button type. It has yet to be revealed if new trim options, color combinations or electronics options would be joining the 2010 spec sheet.

Information on the 2010 Lexus GS 350 & 460 has been announced, and as it turns out, not much has changed. The latest edition of the Lexus sports sedan sees the following changes:

iPod/USB connectivity has been added to the standard Lexus sound system, along with streaming audio via Bluetooth & an integrated XM satellite radio receiver.
The optional Lexus navigation system has been upgraded to the sixth generation software, which means the new Voice Command voice recognition and integrated XM NavTraffic & weather.
The new Safety Connect/Lexus Enform telematics system is also available.
Active Front headrests have been added.
There are two new exterior colors: Deep Sea Mica replaces Black Sapphire Pearl and Satin Cashmere Metallic replaces Golden Almond Metallic. In addition, Parchment leather interior takes the place of Cashmere.

The headlamps, grille & bumper were all revised, as were the taillamps, license plate surround and exhaust diffusers.
The side mirrors now have integrated turn signals.
The standard 18-inch wheels have a new 10-spoke design.
Safety Connect/Lexus Enform is now available.
The Advanced Pre-Collision System is now an option on the LS 460L, as is the Driver Monitor System and Lane Keep Assist.

Lexus Supercar Confirmed for Tokyo Motor Show

Lexus has announced that “a revolutionary two-seat supercar” will be unveiled later this month at the Tokyo Motor Show—the full brief:

This concept vehicle epitomizes the purest form of driving exhilaration and performance. (Details to be announced at the Lexus press briefing on October 21.)

This “two-seat supercar” is, of course, the LFA—though I’m not sure why it’s still being referred to as a concept vehicle. Only two weeks left!

2010 Lexus ES 350 Official Photos

The finalized 2010 ES has been revealed by way of the Lexus China website—let’s start off with some exterior photos:

The changes, as far as I can see:

New front bumper and foglights
New head lights & tail lights
Chrome Side strip
Rear view mirrors with integrated turn signals

On a whole, the exterior changes are minor, and with the exception of the chromed foglights, are all improvements over the current ES.

As far as the interior, the biggest change looks to be a steering wheel—which now has separate buttons rather than the single plastic layout:

Also, there are some new wood accents, with one right under the navigation screen and the other integrated with the glove box. All of these interior changes are great, especially the new steering wheel, but I spot one update I don’t care for: the center arm rest has been replaced instead of retaining the unique easy-close design.

One of the other things revealed on the Lexus China website is that the ES will indeed be offered in that country with the four-cylinder 2AZ-FE engine, which is the same engine that powered the Toyota Camry until it was updated for 2010.

Both the front and rear lights have been revised, along with a new front bumper, new foglights, a new grille. Chrome side molding has also been added.

The standard 17” alloy wheels now have a split five-spoke design.
There are four new colors available: Truffle Mica, Peridot Mica, Satin Cashmere Metallic and Cerulean Blue Metallic will replace Moon Shell Mica, Amber Pearl, Aquamarine Pearl, Black Sapphire Pearl and Golden Almond Metallic.

The 2010 Lexus ES 350 gets freshened interior and exterior styling and new features. ES is essentially a luxury version of the Toyota Camry. The sole powertrain teams a 272-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, curtain side airbags, front and rear side airbags, and front knee airbags. Lexus' Pre-Collision System, which readies airbags, seatbelts, and brakes when sensors detect a skid or imminent crash is optional. Newly standard are rain-sensing windshield wipers and driver-seat memory system. Also standard are a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and keyless access and engine start. Heated and ventilated front seats and a voice-activated navigation system are optional. The optional Ultra-Luxury Package includes features such as a panoramic sunroof, specific interior trim, power rear sunshade, and a passenger-seat memory system. Newly standard is Lexus' Safety Connect, which includes collision notification, stolen vehicle location, emergency assistance, and enhanced roadside assistance. Lexus to roll out system that lets its cars talk to drivers

For every company that ever dreamed of being able to talk directly to its customers, Toyota (TM) has found an answer.

It announced Wednesday that new Lexus vehicles will start being delivered later this year with a system that includes capability for voice messages sent directly from the automaker to its drivers.

Called Lexus Insider, the service will let Lexus send audio messages to participating owners on whatever subject it chooses, from tips on making the best use of the vehicles' features to suggestions for a scenic drive.

Toyota officials promise to be discerning and restrained.

"We're not going to barrage customers with marketing messages," vows Jon Bucci, vice president of Toyota's U.S. advanced technology unit.

Toyota believes the capability, part of a larger package of new electronic features coming to select Lexus vehicles under the name Enform, is a luxury-car first. Spokesmen for its two top import competitors, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, say they don't offer it. BMW has a system that allows drivers to remotely send themselves reminder messages and map routes to their navigation systems.
